Dave asked Allen GInsberg angrily why he preferred arranging expensive lunches for bank managers, executives and lawyers to drinking cheap Italian wine and eating baguettes with youngsters, who were thirsty for poetry. Allen’s face went pale. It was as if he’d seen a ghost. Not until then did I realise the likeness between Dave and another athlete who also burnt for literature and led a wild life, namely Allen’s big hero, Neal Cassady.
